Proverbs 8 - Wisdom of God

INTRODUCTION: In this Proverb I have separated the verses into four divisions as I believed that the personification of wisdom is to be representative of one of the members of the triune God. The verses in Proverbs 8 that are very similar to the account in Genesis chapter 1 agree that Jehovah made all things that exist. Genesis states the Jehovah made man in the image of God to have dominion over the created world, and Proverbs 8 states that the delight of wisdom was with the sons of men.

NOTE: Bible passages are from the 1901 American Standard Version.

A - WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING CAN DRAW FOLLOWERS TO THE LORD

Proverbs 8 "1 Doth not wisdom cry, And understanding put forth her voice? 2 On the top of high places by the way, Where the paths meet, she standeth; 3 Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, At the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud: 4 Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of men. 5 O ye simple, understand prudence; And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart. 6 Hear, for I will speak excellent things; And the opening of my lips shall be right things. 7 For my mouth shall utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverse in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, And right to them that find knowledge. 10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; And knowledge rather than choice gold. 11 For wisdom is better than rubies; And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it."

COMMENTS: This Proverb presents opportunity for the reader to spiritually profit from the personification used in a manner consistent with the benefits the Apostle Paul described for Timothy.

2 Timothy 3 "16 Every scripture inspired of God [is] also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work."

The wisdom from God being "spoken" in this Proverb is like a town crier of ancient days who shouted out his message when that was the means of declaring announcements to all who were available to hear in the city. The proclaimed content given herein is truth that is fully righteous with absolutely nothing perverse; and the meaning would be understood by those who seek after the knowledge that is far better than obtaining great riches of silver or gold. Another Proverb directly attributes this special source of wisdom to be the words of Jehovah, given for those who are made righteous in God.

Proverbs 2 "3 Yea, if thou cry after discernment, And lift up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures: 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For Jehovah giveth wisdom; Out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding: 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; [He is] a shield to them that walk in integrity; 8 That he may guard the paths of justice, And preserve the way of his saints."

B - WISDOM FROM GOD HAS THE ONLY LASTING VALUE

Proverbs 8 "12 I wisdom have made prudence my dwelling, And find out knowledge [and] discretion. 13 The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the perverse mouth, do I hate. 14 Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might. 15 By me kings reign, And princes decree justice. 16 By me princes rule, And nobles, [even] all the judges of the earth. 17 I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me. 18 Riches and honor are with me; [Yea], durable wealth and righteousness. 19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; And my revenue than choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice; 21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, And that I may fill their treasuries."

COMMENTS: The true wisdom about the existence and nature of Jehovah God should dwell within one who desires to be guided in life by God, on the pathway of good judgment and the proper use of discretion. The fear of Jehovah, is shown by having the wisdom to hate the things that Jehovah hates.

Psalms 119 "103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! [Yea, sweeter] than honey to my mouth! 104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: Therefore I hate every false way."

Counsel and sound knowledge are part of the understanding that result in immeasurable force, strength, and influence to enable rulers to reign and decree justice. The personified wisdom loves those who love him, and those that diligently seek him shall find him. The riches and honor which are fruit to be gained by finding this personified wisdom are imperishable, and far exceed the temporal value of silver and gold. What a reward to seek and find the one who walks in the way of righteousness and in the midst of the paths of justice; who will cause those who love him to inherit the essential nature of rich resources of lasting value.

Isaiah 45 "18 For thus saith Jehovah that created the heavens, the God that formed the earth and made it, that established it and created it not a waste, that formed it to be inhabited: I am Jehovah; and there is none else. 19 I have not spoken in secret, in a place of the land of darkness; I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I, Jehovah, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right."

James 1 "5 But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed."

C - THE WISDOM OF GOD WAS FULLY WITH GOD IN THE BEGINNING

Proverbs 8 "22 Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old. 23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, Before the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills was I brought forth; 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, Nor the beginning of the dust of the world. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there: When he set a circle upon the face of the deep, 28 When he made firm the skies above, When the fountains of the deep became strong, 29 When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth; 30 Then I was by him, [as] a master workman; And I was daily [his] delight, Rejoicing always before him, 31 Rejoicing in his habitable earth; And my delight was with the sons of men."

COMMENTS: The wisdom which is the subject of this Proverb is one of the everlasting characteristics of the eternal triune God. Just as Jehovah God has no beginning or no end, this "wisdom" is forever with him. The personified wisdom was with God and was brought along side to participate even before the works of creation, as described in verses 24 through 29, were started by Jehovah God. Wisdom was with Jehovah as a master workman; And rejoiced always as the delight of Jehovah. The personified wisdom rejoiced in the habitable earth from Jehovah; And wisdom's delight was with the sons of men.

Psalms 37 "4 Delight thyself also in Jehovah; And he will give thee the desires of thy heart. 5 Commit thy way unto Jehovah; Trust also in him, and he will bring it to pass."

Jeremiah 9 "23 Thus saith Jehovah, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; 24 but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah who exerciseth lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Jehovah."

John 1"1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not."

Colossians 1 "12 giving thanks unto the Father, who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; 13 who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love; 14 in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins: 15 who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; 17 and he is before all things, and in him all things consist."

D - THE WORD OF THE LORD IS TRUTH AND LIFE

Proverbs 8 "32 Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me; For blessed are they that keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, And refuse it not. 34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. 35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, And shall obtain favor of Jehovah. 36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: All they that hate me love death."

COMMENTS: Wisdom wants the sons to listen, because they will be blessed if they keep the ways of wisdom. The instruction will make a person wise, so it must not be refused. Even more than that, those who continually watch and wait to gain more of that instruction will be blessed. That blessing will be redemption as indicated in the Psalm below, and following His commandments will be the evidence of a good understanding. When Christ appeared he revealed the redemption of God in the form of flesh, and it is clear that belief in Christ brings life eternal; but those who reject Christ are sinning against their own soul, and thereby choose death.

Psalm 111 "9 He sent redemption to his people: he has commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endures for ever."

John 3 "34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Romans 8 "13 for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

1 Thessalonians 5 "21 prove all things; hold fast that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil. 23 And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

--- REFLECTIONS IN PRAYER ---

Jehovah God, I pray that I have not been slack in my listening and learning from your perfect wisdom as I continue to be near the "door" of your Scripture to hear and apply that which you have prepared. I thank My God for each degree of understanding you have given to me as I know that there will always be much more for me to learn from the Holy Scriptures. I ask that you guide me by the Holy Spirit to use Godly wisdom in whatever manner is most pleasing to my God until my time on earth has passed. I thank you also, Jehovah, that I know if there are times when I fail to do your will for me, I can humbly confess and ask for your forgiveness. Amen.
