Psalm 1 - Blessed is the One

INTRODUCTION: I began my commentary and prayer response project in mid 1999 with the plan to examine the Psalms by looking first at the opening Psalm of each of the five book divisions within the Psalms of the Old Testament. This initial study was approached with a simple listing of three versions of the Bible, followed by prayer response after each verse group. The commentary was embodied in each prayer. The Bible versions used for this study were from my Online Bible software and they appear in order: the American Standard Version (ASV), the Revised Webster 1995 (RWEBSTR), and the Bible in Basic English (BBE).

Verse 1, from three Bible versions

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers.

1 Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord.

** Verse 1 - Reflections in prayer **

Lord Jesus, give me the strength through your Holy Spirit, that I might apply only the counsel of your Word in my daily walk, understanding that the counsel of the world (Satan's domain) often seems very sensible to follow, through his clever deceit. Let my stand be based on the preparation of the full armor of God as described by Paul, and then let me take your stand, and not that of those who remain in their sin and stand in opposition to you. Thank you for the blessings which will keep me from using the judgment of those who scoff at your authority over all of creation.

Verse 2, from three Bible versions

2 But his delight is in the law of Jehovah; And on his law doth he meditate day and night.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

2 But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and whose mind is on his law day and night.

** Verse 2 - Reflections in prayer **

O Lord, create in me a new heart which will have sheer delight in your Word which speaks of you in all your glory. Clear my thoughts that I might meditate on (reflect, ponder, contemplate, have pensive thought, weigh mentally, give careful and serious thought to) all of your word throughout my waking hours, and in every context of my life.

Verse 3, from three Bible versions

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water, That bringeth forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also doth not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he doeth shall prosper.

3 He will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which gives its fruit at the right time, whose leaves will ever be green; and he will do well in all his undertakings.

** Verse 3 - Reflections in prayer **

Thank you Lord for the promise of being like a tree which has an unending supply of the life giving water at its roots, as you have provided to me your water of life springing up from within because of being rooted in Christ. My hope is not in my physical body which shows the signs of death from the curse, but rather in the eternal life which will be like leaves which never wither. Thank you that whatever my life brings here, I am guaranteed that spiritual fruit in the determined season, and for your glory, because it is from the counsel of your will.

Verse 4, from three Bible versions

4 The wicked are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

4 The evil-doers are not so; but are like the dust from the grain, which the wind takes away.

** Verse 4 - Reflections in prayer **

Verse 4:

When I consider those who reject you Lord, praise for my salvation in Christ wells up within my soul. As the wind separates the chaff from the grain, so shall the wicked be separated from those who have been redeemed.

Verse 5, from three Bible versions

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

5 For this cause there will be no mercy for sinners when they are judged, and the evil-doers will have no place among the upright,

** Verse 5 - Reflections in prayer **

Your judgment will be righteous, and those who took their stand against your son, will be unable to stand in the assembly of your elect at the end of all time.

Verse 6, from three Bible versions

6 For Jehovah knoweth the way of the righteous; But the way of the wicked shall perish.

6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

6 Because the Lord sees the way of the upright, but the end of the sinner is destruction.

** Verse 6 - Reflections in prayer **

For you are the judge of all the earth, and you will do only that which is righteous. You know our goings out and comings in. ... when we rise up and when we lie down ... even our thoughts are laid bare before you. The ungodly, those who reject your salvation and remain in their sin, will be rejected by you and cast into the lake of fire. Thank you Lord for choosing me, and saving me from this righteous judgment. Strengthen me against the world, my flesh, and the devil; and show me new ways to serve you daily. Amen.
